I’m a planner! L will be 3 for the next school year, but my intention is to enroll her in Classical Conversations, when she is 4. I plan on doing Montessori inspired geography activities at home with her this year to introduce her to the subject. I want her to have a good basis on general geography before she starts to memorize specifics.
In order to establish that the earth is covered by land and water, I want to use the sandpaper/continent globe. It’s on my wish list. The continents are in sandpaper to designate land; they are also distinguished by color.
I also plan to read a book on each specific continent. My intention is to go over one continent a week in depth. (Click here if you can’t see the book list.)
After she is familiar with all the continents, I’ll show her the different countries in North America utilizing the Montessori North America Wooden Puzzle Map. (Thanks to Caliber Montessori’s great sale, I was able to purchase almost all of the Montessori Puzzle Maps for $12 each!) I just briefly want to touch on the fact that she lives in the United States of America. I won’t asking her to memorize all the countries in North America at this point.
Each of the Montessori maps has a labeled and unlabeled control map available for purchase as well.
My next step will be to introduce her to land forms: island, lake, archipelago, system of lakes, cape, bay, peninsula, gulf, isthmus, and strait. My intention is to review a pair per week.
Both are available with photographs instead of illustrations.
I am also considering going through the advanced land forms: canyon, mesa, delta, desert, glacier, lagoon, reservoir, river, spit, and volcano with a second set of nomenclature cards and book.
I plan to read a book on each specific landform, if available. (Click here if you can’t see the book list.)
Montessori Print Shop has nomenclature cards and a book for rivers, specifically, if I decide to go through the advance land forms.
As an alternative to the advance land forms, I may ‘follow’ Classical Conversation – Geography for Weeks 21, 23, and 24; however, I would stretch out the information over several weeks.
- Learn the Canadian Provinces using the Montessori Canada Puzzle Map.
- Learn Province Flags
- Notebooking pages are also currently on sale from Currclick.
Week 23 & 24:
- Learn the South American countries using the Montessori Puzzle Map of South America.
- Learn country flags. See them in use at Chasing Cheerios.
- Learn South American landmarks with Montessori Print Shop nomenclature cards.
