The most viewed post on Growing a Godly Girl by far is Classical Conversations Cycle 1 Science, a list of ways to expand on the grammar. For Weeks 8-12 and 15-17, the majority of the suggested resources come from Montessori Print Shop.
The bundle includes tree, leaf, flower, mountain, and volcano nomenclature cards and nomenclature books as well as botany cabinet leaf shape 3-part cards and book.
This is what the resources look like in action: For Week 8, the science prompt is “What are some parts of a plant?” The response would be a list: “leaves, stems, and roots.” (We are specifically reviewing the parts of a tree; trunk and branches fall into the ‘stems’ category.)
First, we read through the nomenclature book, which gives a short description of each part, thus expanding on the basic grammar. It leads into conversations about what items in our house are made of wood, and what it means to grow taller.
Next, L lays out the control set of the nomenclature cards and disassembles her puzzle, placing the corresponding pieces on each card. (Roots look very similar to branches, and this prevents confusion.)
As she puts the puzzle back together, she names the parts of the tree again.
Leaving the control set of nomenclature cards out on her work surface, she proceeds to match up the picture cards and then the label cards. L is not yet a reader, but you wouldn’t believe that amount of joy and pride she shows when she ‘reads’ the labels by matching up the letters on the labels.
Using the nomenclature cards and books are a great simple way to reinforce the vocabulary/grammar, expand on the vocabulary with definitions, and appeal to visual and hands on learners!
L picked up the vocabulary fairly quickly and was able to apply it outside!
I absolutely LOVE Montessori Print Shop! You’ve seen some of their other printables in action at our home before. L enjoyed learning the parts of a fish when we used the Toddler Fish Book during our Mini-Unit, and use the Continent 3 Part Cards daily when reviewing Memory Work. Although I haven’t mentioned it before, we also use the Pink Tower Cards as an extension lesson with the Pink Tower.
